GeM seller registration: what it actually takes
The registration itself is free and takes under an hour. What delays most sellers is documentation mismatch — here is the sequence and where it breaks.
Getting onto the Government e-Marketplace is not difficult and it is not expensive. There is no government fee for seller registration. What stops people is not the form — it is the mismatch between documents they thought were consistent and are not.
The sequence
- Udyam Registration at udyamregistration.gov.in — free, based on PAN and Aadhaar, produces your Udyam Registration Number. Do this first; several downstream benefits key off it.
- GeM seller sign-up — identity verification, business details including legal name, entity type, GSTIN and bank details.
- Document upload — PAN, GST certificate, bank proof, and the Udyam certificate where applicable.
- Bank account verification.
- Catalogue creation — listing products against GeM's category and specification structure.
Where it actually breaks
Almost every delay we see traces to one of four mismatches, and all four are avoidable before you start.

Realistic timeline
Form completion is commonly described as taking well under an hour, with profile verification typically a few working days. We flag that as indicative rather than guaranteed — it is drawn from consultancy guidance rather than a published service standard.
The part that genuinely takes time is catalogue quality. A registered seller with three poorly specified listings is not meaningfully in the market. A registered seller with accurate categories, complete specifications and sensible delivery terms is.
On paid registration services
There is a substantial industry offering paid GeM registration. Registration itself carries no government fee, so what you are buying is someone else doing the documentation work and knowing where it usually fails. That can be worth paying for. It is worth knowing you are paying for convenience rather than access.
